Health & Safety Policy for Garden Clearance Blackwall

Purpose: This policy sets out the commitment of our garden clearance and rubbish removal teams to protect the health, safety and welfare of employees, contractors and members of the public while carrying out garden waste removal, garden clearance work and related clearance services. It establishes clear standards for safe working practices across the rubbish clearance service area and describes how risks will be managed, controlled and reviewed. All staff must read and follow this policy.

Scope and objectives

This policy applies to everyone involved in garden clearance operations, including staff, subcontractors and on-site visitors when clearing gardens, removing green waste, or providing garden tidy-up services. The objectives are to: reduce accidents and incidents; ensure safe handling and disposal of garden waste; maintain safe use of vehicles and equipment; and ensure compliance with relevant health and safety requirements. The policy complements local operational rules and environmental controls without replacing statutory obligations.

Responsibilities and roles

The company management has overall responsibility for health and safety. Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for day-to-day implementation. Every operative and crew member must take reasonable care of their own safety and that of others. Key responsibilities include:

  • Management: provide resources, training and monitoring;
  • Supervisors: conduct briefings and ensure risk controls are in place;
  • Operatives: use PPE and report hazards promptly.

Risk assessment and hazard control

Before work begins a suitable and sufficient risk assessment must be carried out. Typical hazards during garden clearance and rubbish removal include manual handling injuries, cuts from sharp garden waste, slips and trips, traffic risks when loading vehicles, and exposure to hazardous substances such as pesticides or asbestos-contaminated materials. Controls will be proportionate to the task and may include tool guarding, exclusion zones, traffic management and safe lifting techniques. All risk assessments must be recorded and communicated.

Personal protective equipment and equipment safety

Operatives must wear appropriate PPE for garden clearance operations, such as gloves, eye protection, high-visibility clothing, suitable footwear and respiratory protection where dust or airborne contaminants may be present. Equipment – including shredders, chainsaws, hedge trimmers and compactors used for rubbish clearance – must be inspected before use, maintained in accordance with manufacturer instructions and only operated by trained staff. Where powered tools are used, suitable guards and emergency stop measures are required.

Safe vehicle operation is essential for rubbish removal in the service area. Loads must be secured, vehicles not overloaded and drivers must follow safe routes and parking practices. Procedures for loading, unloading and secure transport of garden waste, green waste and mixed refuse must be followed to prevent falls and material spillages. Vehicle checks and load manifests should be completed each shift.

Training, competence and supervision

Our garden clearance team will receive induction training covering this policy, common hazards, safe use of equipment, manual handling and environmental controls. Ongoing training will include refresher sessions, task-specific instruction and assessment of competence for machinery and vehicle operation. Supervisors must ensure that novices work under supervision until assessed as competent. Training records will be maintained.

Incident reporting, first aid and emergency procedures

All incidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported and recorded promptly. First aid arrangements will be available on-site or at a nearby base, and employees should know the location of first aid kits and the identity of trained first aiders. Emergency procedures for fire, serious injury or hazardous material discovery will be clearly communicated; evacuation and incident containment measures form part of standard site briefings. Lessons learned from incidents will be used to improve safety practice.

Waste handling, segregation and environmental controls

Garden waste must be segregated where required and disposed of in line with permitted waste transfer processes. When rubbish clearance uncovers potentially hazardous materials (for example asbestos-containing debris or chemical containers), work must stop and specialist advice sought. Environmental controls such as spill kits, containment measures and correct disposal routes help protect public spaces and waterways. Careful segregation of green waste, recyclables and general refuse reduces environmental impact.

Monitoring, review and continuous improvement

The policy will be monitored through routine inspections, audits and performance reviews. Health and safety performance indicators will include incident rates, training uptake and audit findings. The policy will be reviewed at least annually or after a significant incident or change in operations or legislation. This document is a living policy and will be updated to reflect operational lessons and regulatory expectations for garden clearance, garden waste removal and rubbish removal services.

Compliance with this health and safety policy is mandatory for all staff engaged in clearance for gardens and associated rubbish collection activities. Management will support implementation through resources, training and oversight while employees are expected to cooperate fully with safety measures. Together we maintain safe, efficient and environmentally responsible garden clearance operations across our service area.
